Do Building Codes guides and codebooks really add value to your construction business? Are they cost effective? What about the permits and inspections processes?
Not building to Code can erase your profits - understanding Building Code basics eliminates permit and inspection headaches!
Seven out of 10 homes in the US need some repair right now just to maintain their value. A survey in Phoenix, AZ, for example, showed this year that 87,000 of the city's 545,594 homes need some fixing up and a further 19,000 were beyond maintenance and required serious repairs. One out of every seven homes needs new siding. One in every six needs a new roof.
In many states, the International Building Code is used as the statewide building code. The current IBC is also tougher than its predecessor in that it contains higher wind-speed design levels for hurricane prone coastal zones, according to Larry Franks, senior staff engineer for codes and standards development of the International Code Council.
In other states, the local code is built on top of the International Building Code, so that simply working to the basic code will get you 98% of the way into full local compliance. Avoid costly re-work to meet code!
Don't let lack of knowledge suck money out of your pocket. Get a Building Code guide or codebook and make sure you get your permits and pass inspection the FIRST time.
